In its latest newsletter launched today, 20 August, the New Economics Foundation (nef) announced that the day that marks when humanity starts living beyond its ecologically means falls earlier than ever, this year on 21 August 2010. The jump is almost a month ahead of 2009’s date and is partly due to the availability of new data, meaning that previous Ecological Debt Day dates were almost certainly too conservative.

Aerial view of the campus area under construction
Masaryk University Campus, designed by architects A PLUS a.s. Brno, is the largest project of its kind in the Czech Republic. The project was set up in 2000 and the construction of the first part of the campus was completed in 2005. Currently the last parts of this imposing high-tech building are near to completion.

Haus Ast in Berlin
On the Alt-Stralau (AST) peninsular in Berlin, architects Clarke and Kuhn realised a truly special building project: Haus Ast, a free-standing private house with separate self-contained apartment that is situated amongst the town houses of a popular residential area. The building’s owners attached particular importance to forward-looking planning: right from the start, they wanted to make sure that they could grow old in and with the house.

SHOTOPOP was recently tasked by French-based WIZZ to create the graphics for a new Asics television ad. Bruno Aveillan directed the ad, while SHOTOPOP took care of the graphics and moods.
DESIGN> caught up with South African designers Carin Standford and Casper Franken of SHOTOPOP (now based in the UK) for the lowdown on the project.
